Star Ocean: First Departure R to Release in December

Square Enix announced that Star Ocean: First Departure R will be releasing digitally for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan on December 5, 2019. A deluxe edition that comes with a digital soundtrack will be available exclusively for the PlayStation 4 version.

Star Ocean: First Departure R is a remaster of Star Ocean: First Departure, a PlayStation Portable remake of the original Star Ocean game that debuted on the Super Famicom in 1996. Developed by tri-Ace, the game stars Roddick Farrence, a young swordsman who gets swept into an intergalactic adventure. The remake will boast improved visuals, new artwork, a speed boost for faster field movement, adjustments to the game’s difficulty, and the option to switch between newly recorded voice-overs from both the original Super Famicom and First Departure casts. A two-minute trailer can be seen below.

Update — Square Enix has now confirmed that Star Ocean: First Departure R will also be released in North America and Europe on December 5, 2019. The western release will include English and Japanese PlayStation Portable voice cast options, as well as the newly recorded voice-overs featuring the Japanese cast of the original Super Famicom version.
