Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Gets New Media, Details
Square Enix has released new details and media for the upcoming Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. The update covers the new additions included in the remake of the first two games in the Dragon Quest series, as well as providing more details on the games’ stories and characters.
Both games in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake feature new scenarios. Dragon Quest I includes new encounters with both faeries and dwarves, new powerful enemies to take on, and an appearance from a familiar character who also appears in Dragon Quest III. Meanwhile, Dragon Quest II sees the Princess of Cannock joining as a playable character, new towns and villages, and world-threatening monsters.
Dragon Quest I sees players taking on the role of a young hero descended from the legendary hero Erdrick. He seeks to defeat the Dragonlord, who has risen and unleashed monsters upon the world. Led by a voice in a dream, he visits Tantegel in Alefgard, where he starts his adventure to defeat the Dragonlord and rescue the kidnapped Princess Gwaelin.
Dragon Quest II takes place many years after the events of the first game, with the hero’s descendants having founded three kingdoms that thrive in peace. However, a sudden monster invasion plunges the world into chaos again, with a party of princes and princesses setting out to follow in their ancestors’ footsteps. The player character is the Prince of Midenhall, who is unable to use spells but is greatly skilled at sword combat. They are joined by the Prince of Cannock, who is good at both sword combat and magic; the Princess of Moonbrooke, who is adept with magic; and the Princess of Cannock, who is skilled at using swift attacks and spells.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will release on October 30, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Dragon Quest I-III make up the Dragon Quest series’ Erdrick trilogy, with Dragon Quest III (which received the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake in 2024) taking place before the events of the first two games. The first Dragon Quest was initially released for the NES/Famicom in Japan in 1986 and in North America in 1989, while Dragon Quest II was first released for NES/Famicom in 1987 and in North America in 1990.
