The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Releasing in September, More Details Revealed
Nihon Falcom announced that The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter will release internationally on September 18, 2025. The fully 3D remake of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, the first game in the long-running TrailsĀ series set on the continent of Zemuria, will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch, published in western regions by GungHo Online Entertainment. In addition, the developer provided more images and details about the game.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter follows adopted siblings Estelle and Joshua Bright, who set out to become Bracers, a group that acts to protect the safety of the world citizens, usually by slaying monsters or apprehending criminals. Acting as junior Bracers, they look to become full-fledged Bracers by taking on jobs across the Kingdom of Liberl, beginning with one intended for Estelle’s father Cassius, who is suddenly called away on urgent business.
Cassius is a veteran, world-renowned Bracer who has been active across the continent. He is a master swordsman who perfected the “Eight Leaves One Blade” style, and whose decision to adopt Joshua initially draws the ire of Estelle. Another important character met early in the game is Professor Alba. He is a destitute archaeologist who came to Liberl to study its ruins, often venturing into dangerous places and getting into trouble with monsters. Aina Holden is the Bracer receptionist at its Rolent branch, where Estelle and Joshua start out their journey. She supports the pair in their endeavour and is known for being able to hold down her drink.
Other early characters are Nial Burns and Dorothy Hyatt. Nial is an ace reporter for the Liberl News, while Dorothy is his accompanying photographer. He is fairly serious, while Dorothy is unconventionial and carefree, but both are very talented in their respective fields. Finally, Josette Capua is a noble student at the renowned Jenis Royal Academy. She meets Estelle while researching cultural artifacts during a break in the school year.
The Kingdom of Liberl is set in the southwest of the continent of Zemuria, which is smaller than its neighbours the Erebonian Empire and the Republic of Calvard, but rich in resources and traditions. It has an abundance of a resource called Septium and is at the cutting edge of certain technology and diplomatic skills. Ten years ago, it was invaded by the Erebonian Empire, when it suffered significant losses, but has since been able to maintain peace with its neighbours.
Septium is a crystal mineral used within technology called Orbments. These mechanical items use Orbal Energy within circuits made of Septium for numerous uses, including lighting, communications, machinery, weapons, record keeping, and airships. They were invented around 50 years prior to the game, sparking off a still-ongoing technological revolution.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter features a version of the dual-mode combat introduced in The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak, where players can attack regular enemies in real-time action combat before engaging in a turn-based command system. During the active battles, players can use regular attack combos and assigned crafts to attack enemies, as well as dodge their attacks in turn, and potentially unleash powerful link attacks.
The command battle system includes many of the regular elements from across the series, including unique character skills called crafts using a CP resource gained by attacking and taking damage as well as magic Arts that use a different EP gauge. Different enemies have different resistances to different attack types and elements, as well as a stun meter that allows players to use special follow-up attacks, which are also available when critically hitting an opponent. Characters can also enter a powered-up Overdrive mode for a limited time and learn various support abilities to assist in combat.
Nihon Falcom also announced special bonus costume DLC available in certain editions in Japan (not yet confirmed for international versions). The Classic Style Estelle & Joshua DLC features slightly different costumes from the designs for Estelle and Joshua from the original game, while the Plushie Estelle / Plushie Joshua DLC lets players change Estelle and Joshua’s head and/or body to look like the sprite-based graphics of the original game.
Meanwhile, in other series news, Nihon Falcom announced that The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV, and The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie will receive dedicated PlayStation 5 releases in Japan. The dedicated PlayStation 5 versions — already released previously in western regions — will launch in the country on August 21, 2025.
