Ys X: Proud Nordics Releasing on Switch 2 in Japan in July, More Details Revealed
Nihon Falcom announced Ys X: Proud Nordics, its upcoming enhanced version of action RPG Ys X: Nordics, will release in Japan on Nintendo Switch 2 on July 31, 2025. Other platforms have not been announced. In addition to announcing the release date, the developer released new details and screenshots highlighting the enhanced version’s new content.
The new content takes place on Aland Island, a large island located to the north of the game’s main setting of Obelia Bay. An encounter with another Mana user leads protagonists Adol and Karja to explore the island. The content features two new major characters — Canute Gamley and Astrid Zayren — with a connection to the Kingdom of Danmorc, the largest power of the Norman people. Canute is Karja’s cousin and the son of Sven, the ruler of Danmorc. He is known as Canute the Bloodshedder and is known as both a first-class warrior and capable tactician. Astrid is Canute’s Shield Sister and adjutant. She excels at quick thinking and logistical support, and is easygoing with Adol and Karja.
In addition to the new islands and story content, Ys X: Proud Nordics adds a new Mana Action, Mana Hold, to dungeon exploration. This lets players lift certain objects as well as launch them at a target, allowing players to use them as footholds or activate mechanical objects. There are also new Mana Ride races where players challenge others in locations around Aland Island to win potential prizes, while Bergen Arena lets Adol and Karja train against other warriors and earn rewards.
Elsewhere, Muspelheim Shrine is a special dungeon unlocked by meeting certain conditions. It is designed to be very challenging, giving players limited time to act with various mechanics and foes. Players can find rare items called “Deepcrystals” that lift some of its restrictions. Finally, while exploring the open seas, players can come across golden symbols. These trigger a naval battle, and if victorious, players unlock a new Sea Breeze that increases sailing speed.
Ys X: Nordics takes place between the events of Ys I & II and Ys: Memories of Celceta. It sees Adol visiting the northern sea’s Obelia Bay, where he encounters a seafaring people called the Normans. After allying with the pirate Karja Balta, the two work to save the archipelago’s people from apparently immortal creatures called Griegr. The game’s combat system allows players to take control of Adol and Karja independently or as a duo, while players can explore the seas on their ship, the Sandras, and engage in naval battles. In separate Japanese Ys news, Nihon Falcom also announced Japanese dedicated PlayStation 5 releases for both Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana and Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. Both games will release on the console in the country on July 31, 2025. PlayStation 5 versions had previously been released in North America and Europe by NIS America.
