Dragon Quest III HD-2D Reveals New Vocation, Party Customisation

Square Enix released new screenshots and details for the upcoming Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The information reveals new party customisation options for players — including a brand new vocation — and the new Monster Arenas.

Dragon Quest III begins in the kingdom of Aliahan, with players controlling the son or daughter of Ortega. On their sixteenth birthday, they are given an order by the king to complete their father’s quest and slay the Archfiend Baramos. Players are joined by up to three companion party members who can be recruited at Patty’s Party Planning Place.

In the original game, players were only able to choose their allies vocations’, which determine their role and skills, some of which aid players during their exploration as well as in battle. However, the remake also allows them to choose their appearance, voice, and personality, which affects the strengths and weaknesses. The remake also allows players to register their allies to use in a different playthrough on the same account, including their current attributes, level, and equipment. Allies can also change vocations, though this will return them to level 1.

In addition to returning classic vocations such as Warrior and Mage, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake introduces the new Monster Wrangler vocation. Monster Wranglers allow players to befriend various lonesome monsters and use various monster abilities in battles. Players can find less hostile monsters hidden across the world, including in towns and dungeons, who can be scouted for the Monster Arenas.

Monster Arenas sees players pitting their team of three monsters against those of other trainers. Monsters act on their own, but players can set tactics to influence their actions. There are multiple tournaments across the world covering different ranks that reward gold and other prizes.

Dragon Quest III originally released for the Famicom in Japan in 1988 and is the third title in the connected Erdrick saga. It takes place prior to the events of its predecessors, with the other two games set to release as Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake next year. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will release on November 14, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
