Dragon Age: The Veilguard Looks at Character Progression
EA and BioWare released a new blog post detailing character progression in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The game will allow player protagonist Rook to reach level 50, granting them various options to tune their play style. While players will gain experience from defeating enemies and exploration, the greatest rewards will come from completing quests.
Upon levelling up, Rook is granted a Skill Point to spend in the Constellation Skill Tree with different types of skills available: Class, Ability, Major Passive/Ability Upgrade, Trait, and Minor Passive/Stat Boost. Class upgrades offer core skills and weapon proficiencies; Abilities grant more potential actions to equip in combat; Major Upgrades add effects or modifiers to existing Abilities and Stats; Traits modify existing class skills such as extending an attack combo; and Minor Boosts increase efficacy of Abilities and Stats. Players can refund Skill Points at any time for no cost.
Meanwhile, players will be able to purchase and find weapon, armour, and accessories through their journey. Each piece of equipment has its own stats and properties, with duplicate items allowing players to increase stats and unlock additional properties. Players can upgrade and enchant items at the Caretaker’s Workshop in their base at the Lighthouse. Each item or Ability can have one enchantment applied at a time, and each enchantment can only be applied to a single item or Ability. As Rook upgrades the workshop, more enchants are unlocked.
In addition, players can improve their companions. The seven companions have their own level system, with each level granting two Skill Points to spend on their Skill Trees. Each companion has their own set of quests, which are the primary method for them to gain experience, alongside conversations and decisions. Rook is able to take two companions with them on missions. Each companion has their own gear, which can be upgraded and enchanted.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard will take players across numerous regions of the world of Thedas, including Rivain, Weisshaupt, Arlathan, Minrathous, and the Deep Roads. Players control a new protagonist named Rook, who must fight back after corrupt Elven gods break free and wreak havoc upon the world. They will be joined by seven companions: Harding the Scout, Neve the Detective, Lucanis the Mage Killer, Bellara the Veil Jumper, Emmrich the Necromancer, Davrin the Warden, and Taash the Dragon Hunter. Dragon Age: The Veilguard will release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 31, 2024.
