Star Ocean: The Second Story R Gets Early Launch Trailer, New Game+ Details

Square Enix released a new trailer for Star Ocean: The Second Story R. The trailer’s release comes ahead of the Star Ocean: The Second Story remake’s launch for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on November 2, 2023.

Square Enix also revealed the game’s New Game+ mode and what it carry over into a new playthrough. Players will be able to carry over all non-key items, Fol (money), Skill Points, Battle Points, character levels, skill progression, character Friendship levels, encyclopedia completion status, completed Fun City facilities, completed missions, and player info. Finally, the company released new character artwork and sprites for the antagonistic Ten Wise Men — Camael, Gabriel, Haniel, Jophiel, Lucifer, Metatron, Michael, Raphael, Zadkiel, and Zaphkiel — as well as new support summons of previous other Star Ocean protagonists — Ratix, Fayt, Edge, Figel, Raymond, and Laeticia.

Star Ocean: The Second Story was originally developed by tri-Ace and released for PlayStation in Japan in 1999, followed by North America in 2000 and Europe in 2001, with a PlayStation Portable remaster — Star Ocean: Second Evolution — later released worldwide. The Star Ocean: The Second Story R remake features 2.5D graphics with full Japanese and English voice overs, original and re-arranged music, new battle mechanics, and more. The game features two main protagonists — Claude C. Kenny and Rena Lanford — with players selecting one as the primary viewpoint character. Claude is a lieutenant with the Pangalactic Federation who becomes trapped on the medieval-technology planet of Expel. Rena is a native of Expel who has extraordinary healing powers.
