I suppose Tenebrae from Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World counts. He’s a Centurion, but he looks like a black panther. He’s a major deadpan snarker and likes to troll people, especially Emil. In one skit, Emil accidentally calls Sheena “Mom” and asks Tenebrae for help. Instead, Tenebrae implied Emil likes to ogle Sheena’s bust, getting him an earful from Sheena and Marta.
Untitled Goose Game obviously has one of the greatest misbehaving animals in all of gaming. However, I must also give a shout-out to Stray. The look of utter despondency from the robots as the cat knocks over all their mahjong tiles is priceless. So my answer is the cat in Stray as played gleefully by my pre-teen daughter.
My favourite animal character in RPGs, though, misbehaving or not, is Myau in the original Phantasy Star. It’s an unfeasibly impressive 8-bit game regardless, but I particularly appreciate the extra effort spent on animating Myau’s running in the overworld. It’s just lovely.
Oh, additional shout-out to Boo, the miniature giant space hamster in Baldurs Gate. Does it misbehave? Well, it takes up a limited inventory slot, so let’s say yes!
