New Release Round-Up (March 17, 2022)

Welcome to RPGamer’s new release round-up. In this column we look to provide our readers with details on all of the RPGs released over the week. Please note we do not currently include Early Access releases where the game is still in development.


ANNO: Mutationem

Action adventure RPG ANNO: Mutationem takes place in a cyberpunk setting and uses 3D environments with pixelated 2D characters. The game follows Ann Flores and her hacker friend Ayane as Ann looks for the whereabouts of her brother. It includes 3D exploration with 2D combat as well as numerous sidequests including a bartender mini-game.


Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness

Platform: PC, Mac, Linux

Party-based RPG Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness is inspired by classic cRPGs such as Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale. The game is set in the kingdom of Isilmerald, on the fantasy world of Yerengal, and features real-time-with-pause combat. It underwent a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in 2018 and had been in Early Access since August 2021.


Curious Expedition 2

Curious Expedition 2 is a narrative roguelike that takes place in an alternate world where mysterious islands have begun to appear and vanish, with explorer clubs funding expeditions to bring back treasures to the 1889 World Fair in Paris. It features procedurally-generated worlds and storytelling with players required to manage their expedition’s resources and sanity. Dark Deity

Tactical RPG Dark Deity is set on the world of Terrazael and follows the story of four graduates from Brookstead Military Academy as war appears ready to break out. It features thirty playable characters with over fifty tiered character classes and includes a Grave Wounds system where characters that fall in battle are given penalties to their attributes. Royal Frontier

Turn-based roguelike Royal Frontier puts players in control of a group of three heroes tasked with guiding a caravan safely across a perilous continent. The heroes need to choose their path, managing resources and overcoming the dangers along their way, with players able to select three Blessings at the start of each run to enhance their chance of survival.


Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Stanger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is an action RPG reimagining of the first title in the Final Fantasy series and is developed by Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja division. It follows the Warriors of Light, led by Jack, as they aim to restore the light to the crystals of the kingdom of Cornelia. The game features co-op for up to three players, with missions taking players to locations inspired by places in other mainline Final Fantasy titles.


The Cruel King and the Great Hero

Platform: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch
Publisher: NIS America
Developer: Nippon Ichi Software
Available: PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop
Price: $29.99

The Cruel King and the Great Hero is an RPG from Sayaka Oda, creator of The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince. The release date reveal is accompanied by a new gameplay trailer that shows Yuu as she undertakes adventures in the forest, tailed by her dragon guardian. Yuu seeks to emulate her father and become a great hero. Yuu’s father defeated the dragon in the past and asked the dragon to look after Yuu when he passed away.
