Kickstarter Check-In: Sea of Stars

Sea of Stars is a retro-inspired RPG from Canadian developer Sabotage who has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for the game. Sea of Stars follows the success of the group’s previous project, The Messenger, and is a prequel set in the same universe. A trailer for the game can be viewed below.

Sea of Stars is inspired by classic RPGs with Sabotage aiming to modernize many aspects of the genre. The game features a turn-based combat system, with two of six unique playable characters revealed thus far. Zale was born on the Summer Solstice and wields a sunblade in battles, while Valere was born on the Winter Solstice and fights with Lunar magic and her moonstaff. Together they can perform powerful synergized attacks in the form of Eclipse Magic.

Sea of Stars will have no random encounters as battles take place on the same field after initiating physical contact with an enemy, with no load times. There is no need for grinding as character advancement will proceed naturally along with the story. Combat relies more on strategy then brute force and stats, though there will be a leveling system with new stats and moves unlocked as characters progress. Battles will also feature timed attacks, spell breaking, and a boost system, with the occasional large boss battle waiting for players at the end of a dungeon.

The story follows the Children of the Solstice and their battle against the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer. Players can explore the world in an array of methods, such as climbing, jumping, diving, swimming, and sailing in order to advance and discover new areas. The game will also have a day and night cycle that is being powered by the Unity engine.

Currently Sea of Stars is expected to launch with English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese language options for PC and consoles. Sabotage was looking to hit $90,000 in funding by April 18, 2020, but surpassed that goal the first day the campaign opened. Those who pledge at least $24 will receive a digital copy of the game, wallpapers, digital artbook, and their names in the end credits as part of their backer rewards. Sea of Stars is expected to launch in 2022.
