Star Ocean: First Departure R Coming to Tokyo Game Show, First Images Shown

Square Enix has revealed that it will be showing Star Ocean: First Departure R, its upcoming remaster of the PlayStation Portable remake of the first Star Ocean game, at this year’s Tokyo Game Show in September. In its listing for the game, Square Enix revealed that it will include newly-recorded voice acting as well as redrawn character illustrations, though players will be able to switch to the old illustrations if they wish. The first images of the remaster have also been released and are viewable below.

Developed by tri-Ace, the first Star Ocean game was originally released for Super Famicom in Japan in 1996. The game was remade by Tose for PlayStation Portable as Star Ocean: First Departure and released in Japan in December 2007, with North American and European releases following in 2008. The remastered version is being developed for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, though no release date has been announced.

I really wish they’d just make a new game in the series and just stick to the SO2 style like they did with this remake. They clearly sell profitably and they’re relatively cheap and easy to make, especially if they reuse the same engine.

A remaster of a remake? Sounds like recycling.
