Crowdfunding Check-In: Starflight 3, Dolmen

RPGamer’s ad hoc Crowdfunding Check-In feature returns for a look at two ongoing crowdfunding campaigns. This edition features a Fig campaign for HumaNature Studios’ Starflight 3 and a Kickstarter campaign for Massive Work Studio’s Dolmen.

Starflight 3

Starflight 3 is a revival of the space-exploration RPG series from the 1980s. The first game was originally released for PC in 1986, with a Sega Genesis version released in 1991, while its sequel was released on MS-DOS in 1989 and later for Amiga and Mac in 1991. Greg Johnson, the original designer of the first two games is leading HumaNature Studios and development of Starflight 3.

The game will be a single-player sandbox RPG that sees players exploring various star systems, interacting with aliens races, and upgrading their spaceship and crew. There will be an overarching story, where players will need to piece together clues found by interacting with the galaxy’s various species. Other races will speak different languages, perhaps based on describing things through colours or shapes, so depending on their abilities, the player’s crew may prove to be either a help or hindrance to the process of forming a dialogue.

Starflight 3 is currently being developed for PC with an initial planned release of Q4 2020. HumaNature Studios is looking for $800,000 in funding by September 28, 2018. Those who peldge at least $20 will receive a digital copy of the game as part of their backer rewards.

Dolmen

Dolmen is a cosmic-horror sci-fi RPG that previously attempted a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter earlier this year. Developer Massive Work Studio has regrouped from that campaign and returned to Kickstarter following an appearance at Gamescom in Cologne. The new campaign is geared at bringing the game from its current alpha state to an open beta PC build.

Dolmen is a third-person action RPG with both melee and ranged combat, and is set on the hostile planet of Revion Prime. Crafting is a major part of the game, with players creating new weapons and gear using materials dropped from various enemies. The game is currently being developed for PC and the developers are hoping to use the campaign to be able to sign up with a publisher to bring the game to consoles and add in additional gameplay modes such as cooperative multiplayer.

Massive Work Studio is looking for $15,000 in funding by October 4, 2018. Those who pledge at least $20 will receive a digital copy of the game, as well as access to its current alpha build, as part of their backer rewards.
