Death end re;Quest Combat Details Emerge

Compile Heart has provided some new information regarding the combat in its upcoming title Death end re;Quest, along with a new trailer showing the battle system in action. The game used a turn-based combat system, with players issuing commands to party members. On their turn, each character can freely move around to put themselves in the best position to attack. When it comes to selecting commands, combatants can select three actions to undertake. Commonly used actions can be registered to make them easy to reuse.

Dotted around the field are areas called field bugs. When a character touches one of these, they are given debuffs and their contamination level goes up. Once the contamination level goes up to a certain point, however, the character enters a powered-up glitch state, which also replaces their clothing with conveniently-placed hexagonal shapes for unknown reasons. However, is the contamination rate rises too high, the character affected will be unable to act at all. Players can move troublesome field bugs and potentially use them to their advantage.

Though not directly involved in combat due to being in the real world while combat takes place in a virtual world, protagonist Arata can affect the field with his programming skills. The first skill lets him alter the power or types of field bugs present. The second lets him summon captured virtual creatures called Entoma that provide support effects. Finally, he can install a new genre of game into the combat system. Passing the conditions set by the new genre provides the opportunity for a powerful attack, with extra bonuses provided by any summons on the field.

Death end re;Quest follows two main protagonists, Shina Ninomiya and Arata Mizunashi, both employees of the developer behind World’s Odyssey. Though the VRMMORPG is cancelled, Shina finds herself trapped within the game, while Arata attempts to rescue her from outside in the city of Sagami. Death end re;Quest is set to be released in Japan for PlayStation 4 on March 1, 2018. No announcement has been made regarding a western release.
