Expeditions: Samurai Dev Diary Discusses Historical Inspirations

THQ Nordic and Campfire Cabal released a new developer diary video for upcoming strategy RPG Expeditions: Samurai. The two-minute video sees the developers discussing their research into the game’s setting of early 1600s Japan and the voyage of William Adams, who became Japan’s first European Samurai, as well as briefly touching on the game’s companions and choice system.

Campfire Cabal is founded by veterans of original series developer Logic Artists who worked on previous entries Expeditions: Conquistador, Expeditions: Viking, and Expeditions: Rome. Expeditions: Samurai is set to release on Steam Early Access on August 7, 2026, with a full PC release planned for 2027. The game is set in a version history where William Adams’s role is usurped by the player character on account of them arriving first. Arriving onboard the Dutch frigate “De Albatros” as the new leader of a crew of privateers, players are drawn into a civil war, with their choices determining the fates of their crew and the future of Japan.
