Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered Reveals More Characters, System Details
Aquaplus released new screenshots and details for the upcoming Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered, its upcoming sequel to Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten, taking place prior to the events of Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception. The new information introduces more of the characters into the game as well as providing extra details on some of its gameplay systems.
Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered follows Oshtor and his allies on a new adventure after they return as heroes to the empire of Yamato. Amatsuki is the captain of a smuggling ship who has earned respect and admiration from her crew. Chicocoa is a young woman from Arva Shulan who appears to have a connection to Shunya. Shantuura is the title of the current spiritual leader of Arva Shulan, the current holder of which is aiming to give her people a real future. Varga is a warrior vassal of the Shantuura who is on a mission to find an ancient artifact. Finally, Narakfala is another of the Shantuura’s vassals who has assumed the Wordsmith role.
Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered uses the same turn-based combat system as Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten, which features the turn order is displayed by a ring-based gauge in the top-left of the screen. On character turns, players can use skills that are more powerful than regular attacks, but which require MP to use. Each character has their own skills, which can have other effects such as buffs, debuffs, healing, and summoning. In addition to the regular set of skills, players can also gain access to Okugi skills when they enter the Overzeal state. These require even more MP, but can turn the tide of battle.
Meanwhile, Shunya has exclusive access to Soulstones. She recovers one Soulstone every turn, which are used to activate her skills. Many of her skills serve to power up allies or weaken enemies. Oshtor and Mikazuchi can also use their akuruka to transform into their Keshin forms while in Overzeal. This transformation lasts a limited number of turns, with Keshin skills using a percentage of MP rather than a set value. For example, Frozen Demise is a water-element AOE attack that uses 16% of max MP that does great damage and can freeze the target.
In towns, players can seek out the notice board to find requests from the populace. Completing requests grants players experience points and items, with players able to visit Yuuri in Oshtor’s mansion and gain extra rewards after completing certain numbers of requests. Meanwhile, players can invest materials in the capital’s equipment shop to unlock additional wares such as armour and weapons. Players can also use money to fortify their equipment. Finally, while exploring, players can come across shrine’s honouring the divine beast Nuko; touching these fully restores the party’s HP and MP.
Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered is planned to release on May 28, 2026. It will be available for PC worldwide as well as for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan.
