Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero Reveals New Characters and Details

NIS America released new screenshots and details for Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero. The new details for the sequel to Phantom Brave (aka Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle) include characters and gameplay elements.

The characters introduced are Rouen, Henna, Urumi, and Mayfair. Rouen is the Phantom of a beastman who used to be the first mate of the Argento Pirate Crew and the right-hand wolfman of the leader of the fleet, Apricot’s father. He lost his life five years prior to the game’s events following a fateful encounter with the Shipwreck Fleet. Due to his former position, he tends to be overprotective towards Apricot. Henna is the Phantom of a former queen of the desertic Hasara Kingdom, who died in a coup d’état brought about by bad political decisions on her part. She opposes the current queen of Hasara — her sister — and has bewitching powers turning others into her servants.

Urumi is a Phantom boy who inhabits Snowfall Island, a place covered in snow all year round. He met his end at a young age and possesses the ability to control the climate around him. His power caused the death of many inhabitants of Snowfall Island, warranting him the nickname of “devil”. Mayfair is a swashbuckler and the leader of a pirate group, where she acts like a big sister figure valuing her crew she considers like her family. She meets Marona and her companions on the island of Versailles, which she protects from poachers.

The gameplay elements revealed are Protections, O.B., and the ability to equip various objects found on the map. Protections are special effects that affect characters and items on the map and are indicated by a flowing line linking the objects affected. The effects granted by Protections include stat boosts, stat decreases, movement limitations, an inability to use skills, and more. Destroying the item or character responsible of a Protection causes its effect to disappear, while Confining a Phantom into item causing a Protection grants the Phantom its effect.

Thanks to the Throw command, players can launch enemies and objects out of the battle map. Characters thrown out of the battle map are treated as being O.B. (out of bounds) and sustain damage, while items thrown O.B. disappear. If players fall off of the map as a result of their movements, it isn’t considered as an O.B. and doesn’t cause any damage. However, the characteristic of certain terrains can contribute to O.B.

Players are able to “equip” enemies by lifting them, as well as objects found on the map such as rocks, flowers, trees, and more, with the equipped objects granting their skills and passive abilities to their wielders. If players meet certain conditions, they can learn these skills and passive abilities permanently. The equipped items or characters can also take a portion of the damage received by their wielders. In addition, players have the ability to steal enemies’ weapons, with some characters being more proficient in thievery than others.

Like its predecessor, Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero is set in the oceanic world of Ivoire and follows Marona — a girl able to see Phantoms — and her Phantom partner Ash. Marona works as a Chroma, a contractor who takes on requests to solve various problems. As the pair return home from a regular job, they are attacked by the ghost ships of the Shipwreck Fleet, during which Marona’s powers are stolen by a masked man and she and Ash are separated. After washing ashore, Marona encounters a Phantom girl named Apricot who wishes to reunite with her father, the captain of the Argento Pirate Crew that defeated the Shipwreck Fleet in the past. Marona and Apricot decide to revive the Argento Pirate Crew in order to reunite with their loved ones.

Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero is a turn-based tactical RPG with gridless maps. Players deploy their spectral troops by binding them to items placed on the battlefield. One new addition to the battle system from the original game is the possibility to combine phantoms with gadgets, which grants access to their characteristics and skills. Marona can also fuse with her phantom friends to use powerful abilities capable to turn the table during battles. The game features over 50 characters to use and 300 skills to master. Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero is planned to release worldwide in 2025 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

Fascinated by the screens since I saw them, video games are a sorcery I quickly became obsessed with. This passion culminated with the discovery of the RPGs. At that time, they were likely the sole titles where story and world building mattered as much as gameplay. Now, I am writing about them, especially my favorite ones: the JRPGs!
