New Release Round-Up (January 18, 2024)
Welcome to RPGamer’s new release round-up. In this column we look to provide our readers with details on all of the RPGs released over the week. Please note we do not currently include Early Access releases where the game is still in development.
Retro-styled RPG Atlas Wept follows two groups of wayward children on a distant planet. Dezi and Charlie are seeking to find the origin of a malevolent personality-erasing force, while Hal and Lucy are looking to find the truth behind the existence of Gig the Robot Dog. The game takes place over twelve chapters, alternating between each group as the narrative threads link them together. The game’s combat mixes a turn-based battle system with action-based minigames. Players take direct control of the party members to dodge attack patterns that differ between foes.
Life sim RPG Immortal Life is set in a Chinese fantasy world, with players controlling a surviving member of a Taoist sect devoted to cultivation after it is met with destruction. Players help the settlement grow, taking care of crops as well as building bonds with the community and undertaking quests. The game features seasons, each with their own crops and special events, that also includes exploration and action combat. The game had been in Early Access since 2022.
Knights of Grayfang
Turn-based RPG is set land of Eldraad, which is undergoing a war between the humans born from the Twilight Deity and the monsters born from the Nightfall Deity. However, King Edwahl begins turning humans into vampires via a ritual while a sinister force awakens among the monsters.
Legend of Grimrock
Dungeon-crawling RPG Legend of Grimrock sees players controlling a group of prisoners sent to certain death through exile on Mount Grimrock. However, the mountain features a collection of anicent dungeons, tombs, and tunnels that they may be able to navigate to escape. The game features various puzzles as well as real-time combat and grid-based movement.
Victorian steampunk RPG Sovereign Syndicate sees players choose from three playable characters with intertwining stories: orphaned minotaur magician Atticus Daley, cunning corsair Clara Reed, and automaton Otto. Players investigate its steampunk fantasy version of Victorian London, which has twenty distinct locations, while trying to uncover solutions to the protagonists’ problems. The game features branching narrative and dialogue systems, with a tarot card-based chance system plus a skill and etiquette system that rewards consistent use. Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs: The Thrilling Steamy Maze Kiwami
Roguelike dungeon-crawler Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs: The Thrilling Steamy Maze Kiwami is based on the supernatural shōnen manga and anime series Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs, which sees protagonist Kogarashi Fuyuzora living at the Yuragi Inn, where the ghost of a girl named Yuuna resides. The game follows the game’s female cast as they attempt to rescue Kogarashi who is captured by a mysterious spirit. Players take the characters through various dungeons that change layout each time they are entered, with players losing all of their items if they are defeated. It also features a hot spring bathing mini-game. The game released for PlayStation 4 in Japan in 2018.
