New Dragon Quest Monsters Title in Development

Square Enix released a new video celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Dragon Quest’s Dragon Quest Monsters spin-off series. The video shows clips from the various titles in the series, before revealing that a new game is currently in development. No images or details for the new game have been revealed, other than that it is in development for Nintendo Switch.

The Dragon Quest Monsters series features various monsters from the mainline Dragon Quest series. Rather than directly fighting in combat, the player characters relies on allied monsters that they have captured, bred, and raised to battle. The first two games were released on Game Boy Color in Japan in 1998 and 2001 (2000 and 2001 in North America), and re-released or remade in Japan for PlayStation, Nintendo 3DS, and mobile platforms.

A third game, Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart, was released in Japan for Game Boy Advance in 2003. The first game in the Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker series provided its first 3D graphics when it launched for Nintendo DS in Japan in 2006, and released in North America in 2007 and in Europe in 2008. A second Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker title released for Nintendo DS in Japan in 2010, North America and Europe in 2011, with Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 — the most recent original release in the series — released only in Japan for Nintendo 3DS in 2016.
