New Release Round-Up (October 20, 2022)
Welcome to RPGamer’s new release round-up. In this column we look to provide our readers with details on all of the RPGs released over the week. Please note we do not currently include Early Access releases where the game is still in development.
Batora: Lost Haven
Batora: Lost Haven is themed around the balance of mental and physical fortitude with a gameplay mechanic centred on it. It follows Avril, a 16-year-old girl who travels between planets on her quest to save a dying Earth. The game’s combat is billed as “hack-and-slash meets twin-stick shooter” while decisions made throughout the game will impact Avril’s personality. A Nintendo Switch version is planned to release at a later date.
Action RPG Gotham Knights takes place following the death of Batman, with Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin attempting to step up as the new protectors of Gotham City. The group finds itself facing the machinations of the Court of Owls, a secretive society that watches Gotham City from the shadows.
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope
Tactical RPG Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope sees Mario and his friends teaming up with the Rabbids to stop an entity called Cursa, which is consuming energy from the Sparks — fusions of Lumas and Rabbids — and plunging the galaxy into chaos. Players control a team of three members selected from nine playable characters, travelling from planet to planet to free them from Cursa’s influence.
Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal is an enhanced version of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 title Persona 5. The game sees players moving to Tokyo, where they discover another world called the Metaverse and use it to change the malevolent hearts of people, operating as a vigilante group called the Phantom Thieves. The Royal version adds two new major characters, including a new party member, as well as new story content. Management sim/deckbuilder Potionomics stars Sylvia, a witch struggling to save her shop from a debt collector. Fortunately, she has help from other merchants, adventurers, and an overbearing owl. Players will need to get Sylvia to master both potion brewing and salesmanship in order to stock up and earn money, with the game featuring a card-based sales encounter system.
Sea Horizon is a turn-based RPG featuring roguelike, survival, and deckbuilding elements. The game is set on the land of Myrihyn, which has been shattered into numerous islands. Players explore the islands by ship, aiming to stop an invasion by the Dark Fiend. The game’s turn-based combat is said to be inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and Magic the Gathering, using dice-based mechanics that determine the resources available to the player on each turn. PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S versions are planned to release in early 2023.
The Last Hero of Nostalgaia
The Last Hero of Nostalgaia is a satirical action adventure RPG. The game is set in Nostalgaia, the world of videogames, which is collapsing with a mysterious pixellation that is bleeding away the world’s fidelity. Players control a pixellated hero, the world’s last hope, as they fight through an army of enemies while being jeered at by a cynical narrator.
The Valiant is billed as a mixture of action, RTS, and RPG set in Europe and the Middle East in the 13th century. It follows former crusader Theoderich von Akenburg, who is dragged back into conflict when a monk tells him that an artifact Theoderich and his former ally Ulrich von Grevel uncovered years prior contains untold power.
