RPGCast – Episode 507: “Are You Even A Gamer?”

Chris got kicked off his own show this week to make room for a panel full to bursting with #JRPGJuly updates! Some are playing new games, some are playing old games, but let’s face it – everyone will be playing Fire Emblem next week.

The Wii U exclusive Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is in my backlog, and I did try it for an hour once. I stopped playing because it *requires* the Wii U gamepad (the Wii U pro controller won’t work!) and I hate the Wii U gamepad. It’s huge, it’s awkward, and it’s very hard to use when gaming on an exercycle.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions reminded me very strongly of Persona, and I plan to give it another try sometime. TMS and Smash Ultimate will probably be the closest I come to playing any Fire Emblem game, because I don’t like strategy RPGs in general.

I’m going to see Legend of Dragoon through to the end, not just for JRPG July, but also because I am genuinely enjoying it in spite of its flaws. So far, its worst flaw seems to be long load times.

For Action RPG August, I’m planning to play Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. That game’s story allegedly has some connections to Breath of the Wild, and I’d like to finish Skyward Sword before Breath of the Wild 2 comes out.

QOTW: If I had to grade myself on JRPG July, I’d have to give myself a C-/D+. I gave myself three options, finish Octopath, start Xenoblade 2 Torna, or start Lost Sphear, and I did none of them. Any and all free time has gone into FFXIV. If I’m not live streaming the story and side quests on my Twitch channel, I’m grinding gear for my Dragoon, leveling low level classes all to Lv 50 to consolidate my armory inventory and finally sell off really old/low level gear, or grinding levels in Red Made, White Mage, and Dark Knight so I can have at least one class of every role at Lv 80 at some point to do the new Role Quests introduced in Shadowbringers. And despite all this time I’ve been pumping into Shadowbringers I still haven’t beaten the 5.0 story, because of my own self imposed restriction to only progress story when live streaming the game. 😅 I’m a bad JRPG gamer this year.

QotW: I ended up dipping my toe into Trails in the Sky FC for JRPGJuly – and I am having a ball. Great characters, fun story, highly enjoyable (if a little slow) battle system and it’s actually quite nice going back to my old-school PSP for a bit – it’s so much lighter than a Switch…

Playing about an hour a day, I’m somewhere near the start of Chapter 3 in the game, which I guess puts me at about the 60% mark. That makes me unlikely to finish it by the end of the month, but hopefully I can at least reach the final chapter. For me, that’s worth about a C+ for achievement, but a B for effort. The game gets at least an A-.

In Final Fantasy X, I didn’t manage to beat Penance because I got it in my head to get 99999 HP, which means beating one post game boss about 9002 times to get enough HP spheres. If I ever do this again, it’ll be on PC for reasons which Chris will appreciate.

i also played the Oninaki demo, which certainly goes places.

By the time you read this I’ll have kicked off in Three Houses with Female Byleth and Edelgard.
