Yakuza Kiwami 2 E3 Impression

As a latecomer to the Yakuza series, I’m really excited for the Kiwami games! The Yakuza Kiwami 2 demo at E3 was divided into two parts — a slice of the main game, or a slice of Majima’s story. As a newcomer, I decided to go with the former, and it jumped me into a chapter slightly later in the game, where I was on a train travelling to Sotenbori. When I arrived, I quickly made friends with a gossip-monger in a loud purple suit — I made a point to keep him in mind for later.

Then I decided to make friends with some local riffraff! Thankfully there were some nearby bicycles, and I proceeded to gleefully punch, stomach, and bike the crap out of punks. It was glorious. The game seems to have a simplified heat mechanic compared to some of the other Yakuza titles I have dabbled with. Also, different from other titles is that enemies seem to chase you for a really long time.

Following the story, I entered a nearby club, but quickly realized that all the good action was happening in the VIP section. Aha, I thought to myself, I know a guy. So I headed back outside and looked around for the guy in the loud suit. Luckily, through some back channeling (otherwise known as outright blackmail) he was able to get me into the VIP section of the club.

Alas, at that point the demo was coming to a close, so I had to soothe myself by beating up some additional guys in some suits on the way back to the club. When I re-entered the club the demo did indeed end, and I will have to find out what was really going on with those guys in that club when the game launches on PlayStation 4 on August 28. Please save all the bicycles until then!
