Kelley picks up her truck and yeets it at a monster. Ryan is just going to giggle in the background while we talk about Rogue Trader. Robert nose-dived off the end into complete bonkers. It’s been almost a decade since I bought a Sony game physically and I’ve never owned a Microsoft console. Meh, let them do what they do, that’s the way the world is headed anyway.
It’s sad to see physical media go by the wayside. I imagine Nintendo will likely follow suite with their next console. I accept it, though, with some reservations.
Short answer: Bad
Long answer: Aaaarrrrgggghhhhh. Since the Xbox One came out I felt something was off and now with Sony’s announcement it’s finally crystal clear that these current console makers don’t want us to have anything that can be used without their permission, which we would be forced to pay for that privilege. Even Nintendo are leaning into it with their game key cards, and they’ve actually killed their online stores for the DS and 3DS so you know they’ll cut a bitch for profit. There was an article on IGN written by Luke Reilly and he wrote something I have taken to heart:” However, the facts are in, the standard has been set: you cannot trust digital purchases, and you cannot trust the corporations that offer them.” That is the gospel according to Luke. I had such optimism when this started twenty years ago but after seeing the multiple deaths of digital services and shops I now have this compulsion to rush through my digital games as quickly as possible because I know there is an end coming, and that just sucks. This has killed my interest in the next generation of consoles. Retro forever!*
*Until the discs and media die in the next 20 years.
I had already switched over to 95% digital* because I don’t own my own home and still remember how much of a pain it was to move five generations worth of hardware and games when I got “renovicted” a decade ago. That said, I still believe physical is the best way to go for giving games to people, and Sony moving away from it when the PS5 is still likely to be their system of record for the rest of the decade is an unfathomable own goal.
* if I buy both versions of a Pokemon release, it’s one physical and one digital
