In addition to the release date, the presentation provided more details about the game. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set in a world where, once a year, a being called the Paintress wakes and paints a cursed number upon a monolith, which causes everyone of that age to turn to smoke and disappear. Each year, that number ticks down, with the current year set to be the number 33. Players join Gustave and other members of an expedition that sets out, in the footsteps of previous failed expeditions, to try and end the cycle of death once and for all.

In addition to describing the premise and the game’s art direction inspired by Belle Époque-era France, the presentation also introduced characters Monoco (voiced by Rich Keeble) and Esquie (voiced by Maxence Cazorla). Monoco the Gestral is a fully playable character with a unique playstyle that sees him transform into enemies encountered by the party and using their abilities. Esquie is another unusual character who plays a vital role in exploring the world. Players will unlock abilities for Esquie, allowing them to ride him and traverse the overworld map in different ways. Finally, the video showed off the game’s combat, which mixes turn-based battles with real-time defensive and offensive actions, as well as showing some of its character building and progression systems.
