Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Coming in October

Square Enix has announced Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, a full 3D remake of Super Famicom RPG Romancing SaGa 2. The remake is developed by the team behind Trials of Mana and will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on October 24, 2024. It will include original and rearranged tracks from composer Kenji Ito as well as Japanese and English voiceovers, a new timeline combat system, new game mechanics, and more.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is set in the Varennes Empire, which has an ancient legend of seven great heroes who will save the kingdoms within. However, its capital is suddenly attacked with the perpetrator being Kzinssie, one of the seven heroes. After Prince Victor is slain, Emperor Leon swears vengeance and uses inheritance magic to pass his power to his other son Gerard, starting a multi-generational war between the empire and the seven heroes.

The game will feature over thirty available character classes across multiple races and professions. Its inheritance system allows players to select the next Emperor, passing down the powers of the previous generation to them. All playable characters can become Emperor, while inheritance can happen automatically when the current Emperor is reduced to zero life points, the party is wiped out, or when a new era begins, with players also able to choose to have the current Emperor abdicate.

Combat is entered when players contact enemies in environments, with turn order shown on a timeline. Enemies will have weaknesses to different weapons or spells. There are eight weapon types as well as six magic disciplines. If a character is knocked out, their life points reduce, with that character dying when their total reaches zero. The game also uses the series’ recurring glimmer and evasion systems. Glimmer allows characters to automatically learn new techniques when fighting, while abilities that characters have managed to evade can be automatically evaded in future. There are also special United Attacks as well as a formation system. The game will include “casual”, “normal”, and “hard (classic)” difficulty options, with the latter being equivalent to the original release.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven features a free-form scenario where players choices will directly impact events and the outcome for locations in the game. For example, a choice regarding the succession for the throne of Cumberland can result in it coming under the cpntrol of the empire or a civil war destroying the kingdom. In addition, an assault on the Canal Fortress can see players have to face many enemies if they try to sneak in by boat, but they will able to bypass them if they seek the aid of a vagabond. Players are free to visit regions in any order, with the story changing depending on that order. Another feature sees players able to research and build various facilities in their capital city.
