Dragon Quest Treasures Shows Its Monsters
Square Enix released more details and screenshots for the upcoming Dragon Quest Treasures. The new blog post and images go over the game’s monsters, which portagonist Erik and Mia can enlist the help of in their treasure-hunting endeavours on the land of Draconia.
Monsters can be found aplenty on Draconia’s floating islands. While they will often attack treasure hunters such as Erik and Mia, some may wish to join them, offering their unique treasure-locating abilities as well as helping to fight against foes. New monsters are recruited by defeating them in battle, with a message popping up stating a monster has been scouted. Scouted monsters can then join the team if players give them the items they request.
Each monster is given a rarity rating indicated by their portrait frame — bronze, silver, gold, or rainbow — with rarer monsters harder to obtain. Each monster within a species will have the same resistances and treasure capacity, but other stats are unique to each monster. As players progress, some monsters may wish to join Erik and Mia on their own accord. These monsters have unique appearances and names, such as Oozabella, a pink slime with a yellow ribbon who becomes Mia’s first friend on Draconia. Dragon Quest Treasures will introduce some new monsters and variants to the series including the desert-based Marble Slime, the adorable but feisty Fiery Dragling, the lightning-heralding Stormy Sabercat, and the icy Valhalla Vulture.
Monsters have numerous abilities to help Erik and Mia get around. Special abilities are called Fortes. Examples of these include: Launch, where the monster flings them into the air to reach platforms and ledges; Glide, where wings or jets let them get down from high places or reach distant locations; Sprint, which lets them traverse terrain much faster; Stealth, which lets go under low entrances or avoid foes; and Scan, which notes any nearby foraging points.
Dragon Quest Treasures was originally teased as a new Dragon Quest Monsters game in 2018. The game follows siblings Erik and Mia — younger versions of the characters from Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age — who live on a Viking longship and come across supernatural creatures Porcus and Purrsula before being sent to Draconia, a floating island filled with monsters and treasure. Erik and Mia set out on the adventure they dreamed of, seeking to obtain the seven Dragonstones and any other treasure they find, with Purrsula and Porcus acting as their spirit guides. The treasure-hunting RPG will release worldwide for Nintendo Switch on December 9, 2022.
