Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United Announced

Square Enix has announced Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United. Similar to Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, the game is a full 3D remake of the original 1995 Super Famicom RPG Romancing SaGa 3. Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United will release for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 16, 2027.

Romancing SaGa 3 is set in a world that suffers a recurring disaster called the Rise of Morastrum. Every 300 years, the star of death eclipses the sun, resulting in the deaths of all newborn life in that year save for one survivor who becomes known as the Child of Destiny. The Child of Destiny of 600 years prior to the game’s events became known as the Archfiend who brought ruin; however, the one who followed became the Matriarch who drove back the darkness. The game begins a little over a dozen years after the latest Rise of Morastrum, as the Four Sinistrals who served the Archfiend return to the world from the Abyss.

The game features eight protagonists, with players selecting one and following their search for the Child of Destiny from their perspective. Each character has seven base attributes, which can be impacted by their Nonastrum, their star of fate. Players can select the Nonastrum for the protagonists, which can also impact that character’s tech and spell affinity. The eight protagonists are:

  • Julian Nohl (VA: Junya Enoki, Edward Mendoza) — A young man from Sinon. His late father gave him a strong sense of justice, and he resents the Morastrum due to its impact on his life.
  • Ellen Carson (VA: Ikumi Hasegawa, Rebecca Wang) — A young woman from Sinon and elder sister to other protagonist Sarah. She is determined and stubborn, especially when protecting her family.
  • Sarah Carson (VA: Kaede Hondo, Michelle Marie) — A shy woman, she is looking to grow and change to be able to stand on her own after being protected by her sister all her life.
  • Thomas Bent (VA: Takuya Eguchi, Brandon McInnis) — A young man from the esteemed House Bent of Messana. He is known for his wit and strategic talent.
  • Khalid (VA: Katsuyuki Konishi, Ryan Colt Levy) — A skilled mercenary who is also known as the Tornado. His curved sword acts as a reminder of his lost homeland.
  • Mikhail Ausbach von Loanne (VA: Satoshi Hino, Kevin Andrew Rivera) — The current ruler of the marquisate of Loanne, he is also the elder brother of Monika. He is known as a noble ruler who is not afraid to join the front lines to protect his country.
  • Monika Ausbach (VA: Akari Kito, Madeline Dorroh) — The princess of Loanne, she is gentle, kind, and well-loved by the people.
  • Katarina Lauran (VA: Junya Enoki, Edward Mendoza) — A noblewoman and retainer of Loanne. She is skilled in swordsmanship and loyal to Mikhail.

In addition to the eight primary protagonists, players will be able to recruit over twenty other characters. Each potential party member has their own unique stats and abilities. Examples include Count Leonid (Takehito Koyasu, Jalen K. Cassell), an immortal vampire count; Peony (Takako Tanaka, Emi Lo), a mischievous fairie; Robin the Remarkable (Shoya Ishige, Caleb Yen), a masked hero; and Flurry (Chihiro Uno, Kimoy Lee), a sentient snowman. The game features a freeform scenario system where player choices can impact the characters they meet, events, and how the story progresses. For example, an encounter with Ellen and Sarah can lead to both sisters joining the party, or them fighting and one of them leaving.

Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United’s turn-based combat makes use of a timeline indicating the turn order. Encounters are visible on the field, with players able to strike first to gain an advantage. If characters are knocked out, they lose a Life Point (LP); if their LP reaches zero, then they will be unable to participate in combat until they rest. The game includes the series’s regular Glimmer system where characters have a random chance of learning new techniques. The system also allows characters to learn how to evade certain attacks.

Another returning combat element is formations. Different formations, or a character’s position within a formation, can impact the likelihood of them being targeted, grant buffs, and more. As players attack enemy weaknesses, they will build the Overdrive gauge; when full, this can be used to unleash a powerful United Attack. When skills have been used enough times, they can be mastered, allowing them to be taught to other characters.

Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United will include three difficulty settings: Casual, Normal, and Classic (Hard). These can be switched between at any time. The game will also come with a toggle for the original soundtrack or the remake’s new arrangements. Other content includes mini-games. War Mode sees players commanding their own armies against an opposing force, while a Business mini-game sees players purchasing properties from agents and using them to grow funds through strategic investments.
