Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island Gets More Details, Characters

Spike Chunsoft released more details and images for its upcoming roguelike dungeon-crawler Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. The update covers the game’s Sumo power-up status, Behemoths, and Sacred Items, as well as introducing a selection of characters.

The Sumo status is one of the most powerful status conditions and effects in the game. It is granted when Shiren’s fullness exceeds 150, lasting until it falls back below 120. The Sumo status grants Shiren numerous bonuses such as increased Attack and HP, as well as the ability to nullify traps by crushing them. However, it prevents him using items to move.

Behemoths are giant monsters found in another realm accessible by mysterious gates. The gates will sometimes open up in dungeons, unleashing the Behemoth within. They are much more powerful than regular monsters, with extremely high Attack and immunity to blows from the front and side, meaning players will likely want to run if they spot one. Meanwhile, the Monster Dojo is a facility where players can simulate dungeon encounters by placing monsters, items, and traps they have previously encountered to practice their skills and strategies.

A new addition for The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island is Sacred Items. These are rare equipment with random enhanced abilities and come in two forms: Blue and Golden. Golden items are rarer, and their effect varies each time. A rare category of Rune — Natural Runes — can be found on some Sacred Items, which have unique effects not found anywhere else.

Finally, four new characters are Hibiki, Sokusen, Tugai, and Seki. Hibiki is the quartermaster of the Red Orca Pirates who loathes greedy people and sets out to Serpentcoil Island to find a particular treasure. Sokusen is the Red Orca Pirates’ boatswain and Hibiki’s right-hand man, who accompanies her on her expedition. Tugai is the captain of the Black Shark Pirates, bringing his crew to Serpentcoil Island to claim all of its treasures. Seki is the leader of a group of ninja living on Serpentcoil Island, who is known for her kindness and beloved by her compatriots.

Known in Japan as Shiren the Wanderer 6, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island sees Shiren and his trusted ferret companion Koppa adventure on the eponymous island, where is he joined by his friend Asuka and supported by innkeeper Suzuna. Each time Shiren enters one of the procedurally-generated dungeons he starts at level 1 with any gear and levels he obtains being lost if he collapses during exploration. The game will release for Nintendo Switch in North America and Europe on February 27, 2024, a month after its Japanese release.
