Turn-based combat: does it need to be party-based, or can it still be interesting with a single character? I’m not talking about soloing Final Fantasy Tactics with just Ramza, but more RPGs like the original Dragon Quest, when you controlled only the hero. Any brilliant examples?

I looked up some information about Dragon Quest Wars on the 3DS, and was sadly disappointed to learn that it has no story, just a handful of tutorial missions. It’s meant for multiplayer or free play battles only.

I nominate Mega Man Command Mission for best Mega Man RPG and best Mega Man game.

Do you have a recommended order for playing the Xeno games (Xenogears, Xenosaga 1-3, Xenoblade Chronicles, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Xenoblade Chronicles 2)? Oldest first? Newest first? Or does it make no difference?

  8. I might have asked something like this before, but I will again anyway: What is one game that you played (RPG, preferably), that was obviously made on a tight budget or as an afterthought, yet you feel the developers still put a lot of effort into? Maybe it’s just certain aspects of the game, the music, the battle system, the characters, etc. that were particularly well done, even though the rest of it wasn’t as good.

For certain reasons, I’ve had Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World on my mind lately. Dawn of the New World was developed at about the same time as Tales of Vesperia and furthermore, it’s an escort title, so its budget was relatively small. The original Tales of Symphonia is the superior game, but I think the developers, or at least some of them, seemed to really care about the project. The localizers, too, as I’d argue the dialogue is better written in the sequel than the original, and the voice acting is fantastic. DotNW is the funnier of the two. The new characters are great and well-written, particularly Marta, Emil, and Tenebrae. The good ending is one of the best endings I’ve seen in a video game (and it’s easy to get, too!). It also still has the best romantic subplot I’ve seen in a video game.

So yeah, any games like that for you guys?
