Best Non-RPG

Astro Bot

To put it simply, Astro Bot is pure joy in game form. Long has Sony sought to create the sort of beloved mascot platformer that was Nintendo’s bread and butter for so long. In fact, players can find all of those past attempts represented as rescuable bots in this very game. However, the game itself proves to be fire and way more than just a celebration of Sony’s past. Astro Bot is one of the best 3D platformers to grace any system.

Using simple base mechanics and the occasional power-up, Astro Bot is chock-full of colorful and expertly crafted stages. Fun to look at and full of secrets to discover, every newly unlocked stage is a fresh wonder with surprises galore. For more skilled players, there’s even a whole set of challenge levels that will push even the most seasoned gamer to their limits. Sony has finally found its Mario; let’s hope it doesn’t mess it up.

Most Played

Unicorn Overlord

Vanillaware’s previous title 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim took a little time to get traction with the RPGamer staff, but those who did play it were soon enamoured. There were no such problems for Unicorn Overlord, which was swiftly picked up by many of the staff looking forward to see what new ideas the developer would bring to the tactical RPG sphere. They were not disappointed as Unicorn Overlord looks to revitalise interest in tactical RPGs with the help of its trademark graphical style and a fascinating spin on tactical gameplay with real-time combat.

Most Completed

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth achieved a rare feat as all of the staff on record who played it managed to complete it. There’s no denying the game’s ability to suck players in, and it’s made an even more impressive feat by just how vast the game is. With it managing to attain such a large rate of completion despite the huge amount of content it throws at players, it’s no surprise the game appears in our awards as much as it does.

Most Anticipated

Monster Hunter Wilds

After battling competition during the previous generation, 2018’s Monster Hunter: World proved that the series was still king. Capcom’s action series has only gone from strength to strength since then. Thus the anticipation for the newest title, Monster Hunter Wilds, is palpable. Capcom is by no means resting on its laurels with Wilds bringing players to the Forbidden Lands. The new location will feature completely open regions featuring active climates and ecosystem interactions. Meanwhile, a winged Seikret mount makes it significantly easier to adapt on the fly and gear up for longer excursions.

It’s also worth noting the game that came in second place in our voting as the tally was so narrow. Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 looks to offer a fascinating blending of inspirations from classic JRPGs across the generations to its Belle Époque-era France-inspired setting and graphical style. It remains to be seen how everything comes together, but what’s been shown so far has certainly garnered the attention of RPGamers across the world.
