With all the recent news emerging regarding Phantasy Star Online Version 2, many gamers may have forgotten that the original Phantasy Star Online's servers are still up and running. At least, they will be until July 19th when Sega shuts them down briefly for maintenance. In Japan, online play will be suspended from 2pm to 6pm, and in North America, from 7pm to 9pm. However, as depressing as downed servers can be for gamers, remain happy, because when they come back up, Sega will have added two new online quests and one downloadable quest.
The first online quest, "The Lost Maracas" involves an amnesiac hunter and his missing maracas. Only if one's party of four can find them will he regain his memory. As a bonus, finding the maracas will make available new background music.
The second online quest, "Tinkerbell's Dog 2", teams one's character up with Sonic the Hedgehog. Together, it's up to this dream team to locate a young child's missing dog; an epic quest, indeed.
Finally, the downloadable quest "Central Dome Firestorm" demands nerves of steel as players must save a band of hunters trapped in a forest inferno. 51 blocks of VMU memory are necessary to download the quest.
With Phantasy Star Online Version 2 on the way, and 3 new quests to conquer, Phantasy Star fans should be on cloud nine in the coming months. Bonus points to those who can name the Sonic Team games on which these quests are based (and shame on those who can't).
UPDATE: RPGamer has recently learned from Phantasy Star Online Zone that Sonic Team has decided not to update original PSO with their new quests. At this time, only PSO V.2 will be updated. Good news for Japan and importers, bad news for everyone else. Fortunately, the quests will still be available when PSO V.2 is released in North America on September 11. RPGamer apologizes for any confusion.
