Following the original announcement of .hack//GU at E3, some deeper details have come forth. The story, of course, still takes place within an MMORPG called The World, this time in the year 2017--seven years after the end of .hack//Quarantine. The game is now plagued by "Player Killers," which is a definite problem in a game that does not allow Player vs Player combat. Although Kite makes an appearance in this trailer, it is not known what exactly his role will be in all of this. At this time, it does not appear likely that players will control him.
Players might remember the fact that the other four .hack titles were interconnected volumes of one story. Hiroshi Matsuyama, President and CEO of CyberConnect 2, revealed that GU will be a saga spanning three games, but not in the same way as the previous four titles. Whereas the last bunch had the exact same play mechanics, graphics, etc., the GU trio will actually be different games. Furthermore, the first part of the .hack//GU trilogy is said to be larger than all four volumes of the previous saga combined.
BanDai Games looks to release the first part of the .hack//GU trilogy in Japan within the first half of 2006, as the game's development is about 60 percent complete. A North American release will happen afterwards, although there is still no word of a possible European release.
