Sony recently announced that new and different EverQuest title is in the works. Entitled Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest, this PlayStation 2 title will be developed by Snowblind Studios, better known as the developers of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.
Champions of Norrath is set hundreds of years before the well-known current EverQuest PC universe. Players must choose one of five playable characters before venturing into the wilderness of Norrath to stop a growing army of dark-hearted orcs and goblins.
In a new twist, the game will not be an MMORPG. Instead, it will be offline with an online multiplayer option, similar to the one utilized in Phantasy Star Online, that will allow up to four players to team up via the Network Adapter. It will also allow players to use a search engine to locate potential party members. This online option will be free of charge. Those who still want to play the game offline with friends can use the PS2 Multitap to experience multiplayer action.
The game will feature in-depth character customization, which will allow players to modify their character's hair, skin, tattoos, armor, and weapons. Unlike the EverQuest MMORPG, players are limited to only five characters, each available in either gender. The available characters are a Barbarian Warrior, a Dark Elf Shadow Knight, a High Elf Cleric, an Erudite Wizard, and a Wood Elf Ranger. Other notable game features include item creation, randomized dungeons, combination attacks, various camera angles, and over 50 areas with non-linear side quests.
Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest will be available sometime this fall.
