Falcom released some new details and media for the latest mainline entry in its Ys series, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. The developer and publisher showed and gave information for series hero Adol's latest companions, as well as the Isle of the Seiren where the game takes place.
Serial adventurer Adol Christin is twenty-one years old at the time of Ys VIII, which places the game chronologically between Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand and Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim. He is travelling on a passenger ship to the continent of Eresia when it is attacked and sunk by a mysterious sea creature. Adol wakes up on a sandy beach on the Isle of the Seiren, which appears to be untouched by man, at least in recent times. The island has a number of ancient ruins and is inhabited by wildlife that has evolved separately from the rest of the world. These inhabitants are hostile to outsiders, so Adol creates a floating base, which he also uses to help rescue his fellow passengers.
Adol is joined by two new characters in his exploration of the island, Raksha and Sahad. Raksha is nineteen years old and the daughter of a noble family from Garman. She has good knowledge of wildlife and ancient ruins and uses a rapier in battle. This gives her a good reach to do quick successive attacks, but she is vulnerable when there are many enemies. Meanwhile, Sahad is a forty-one-year-old fisherman with a big personality. He is hoping to return to his family and uses an anchor in battle, which lets him hit multiple enemies but leaves him open to quick attacks.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is set to be released in Japan for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in summer 2016. The game has not been announced for a western release.
