Arl Rendon Howe

Arl Howe in Dragon Age: Origins is a great example of the kind of villain upon whom the player can't wait to mete out some good old fashioned justice. He's particularly effective for the human noble origin, in which he betrays and kills the player character's family in order to get his hands on their arldom. In all versions of the game, though, he's the amoral, conniving power behind the throne, responsible for many of the worst excesses of Loghain's government. He hires Zevran to assassinate the Grey Warden, "purges" the elven alienage in Denerim, and even attempts to get Loghain to murder his own daughter as part of a frame-up job.

Near the end of the game, the player is able to exact a satisfying revenge on Howe, killing him in his own dungeon like the rat he is. The archdemon may be the final boss fight in Dragon Age: Origins, but I would argue that Arl Rendon Howe is the game's primary villain. Particularly for my human noble Grey Warden, every victory after defeating Howe just felt like icing on the cake. Oh, and did I mention that he's voiced by Tim Curry? Everything's better with Tim Curry. — Becky Cunningham
