"And it's so easy when you're evil / This is the life, you see / The Devil tips his hat to me!"

From When You're Evil, by Voltaire

Villains — love them or hate them they are the foils to our heroes. Villains exist to compare, contrast and all around disturb the fabric of the world. They are the necessity that keeps history moving and time flowing. They play tricks, contemplate the world that surrounds them, and attempt to make the player see the evils of the world. While many villains prefer world domination or being the ultimate evil, not every foe's motive is always crystal clear.

Villains need love. We tend to focus on what makes the most admirable hero, yet we never think about the important role that the villain plays. An amazing villain is often hard to define, but they create an instant connection to the player if they present themselves well. An excellent villain should have charisma, intelligence, determination, and above all, strength. These traits often serve as the basis for what a villain needs to have, though sometimes having a sense of humor can leave a lasting impression.

RPGamer has decided to celebrate our favourite foes in RPGs. From Nazi generals to disturbed necromancers, to monsters and former celebrities, these villains have managed to leave a lasting impression on our staff members. This is not a list of the greatest RPG villains of all time, but these baddies have managed to leave such a loving and last impression, that they deserve the recognition that only their egos crave. Keep in mind that These pieces WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS, so read at your own discretion. We also encourage you to share your favourite bad guys on our forums!

Author's Note: Huge thank you goes out the staff for their wonderful write-ups and their proofreading efforts. Special thanks to Sarah MCGarr for her lovely banner!
